Heritage Attractions
Devon, in the southwestern part of England, offer a wide range of heritage attractions including castles, cathedrals, monuments, and museums. Most of the museums illustrate the history and the culture of the area and contains large collections of historical items. The Ilfracombe Museum, Barnstaple Heritage Centre, the Maritime Museum in Appledore, Torrington Museum, South Molton Museum, and Combe Martin Museum, are all great attractions for people who like to get to know the history of North Devon. South Devon also boasts a large number of heritage sites. One of the most important attractions is the cave system Kents Cavern which lies just outside Torquay. Kents Cavern contains some of the earliest evidence of human habitation in Britain, and is home to spectacular dripstone formations. Another popular attraction is St Peters Cathedral in Exeter. The cathedral have two beautiful towers which was built by the Normans during the twelfth century. Between the two towers is a 100 meter long Gothic vault with interesting decorations. The cathedral displays an impressive collection of treasures, and is a fine example of magnificent Gothic architecture. Near the cathedral are many ancient buildings such as Mol's Coffee House, and the Royal Clarence Hotel which is considered to be one of the first hotels in England. The hotel was named after the Duchess of Clarence (later Queen Adelaide, wife of William IV). The unique medieval passages under Exeter High Street also attracts many visitors. The passages was built to make it possible to bring water from outside the city, and are now one of the main attractions in Exeter. Other popular attractions in Devon includes Okehampton Castle, Dartmouth Castle, Mortehoe Heritage Centre, Watermouth Castle, and Seaton Tramway between Seaton, Colyford and Colyton. Seaton Tramway offers a great opportunity to explore historic places along the beautiful Axe Valley in East Devon.
